How to spot bought followers before you book a creator

Guide pour marques · 4 min de lecture

Cet article est rédigé en anglais.

Paying for reach that does not exist is the oldest failure in influencer marketing. Bought followers do not buy meal kits. Before you book any creator, here is what to check, and where InFluFlu does part of the work for you.

Self-reported numbers are claims, not facts

A follower count in a media kit PDF is a claim, not a fact. It may be outdated, rounded up, or simply invented, and you have no way to tell which. The structural fix is removing the typing: stats pulled directly from the platforms through a creator-authorized connection, which the creator cannot edit. On InFluFlu that connection is on the way. Until it is live, follower and engagement numbers on a profile are self-reported and labelled that way, so treat them as a starting point and run the checks below.

Engagement tells the truth reach hides

An account with 80,000 followers and the interaction of a small village is telling you something. Ratios vary by platform and niche, so avoid hard thresholds, but compare a creator against similar accounts in the same lane. On InFluFlu the engagement rate sits next to the follower count on every profile, so the comparison takes seconds instead of a spreadsheet. While those numbers are self-reported, a quick look at a creator’s recent posts tells you whether they hold up.

A person you can identify

Fake audiences often come with untraceable owners. InFluFlu ties payouts to a Stripe identity verification, so a profile belongs to a real, known person before any money can ever reach them. Business creators can additionally verify their company registration. An “Identity verified” badge is a fact check, not a decoration: badges here are auto-awarded and auto-removed.

The strongest signal: delivered work

The best predictor of a real audience is a real track record. Every applicant on InFluFlu shows deals completed, rating, and response speed, and their portfolio’s “Verified collab” cases are generated from actual released deals, impossible to self-award. Reviews are mutual and blind (hidden until both sides post), so the scores you read were not written to flatter anyone.

Your five-second checklist

  • Stats pulled from the platform, or, if self-reported, checked against recent posts
  • Engagement in a plausible relationship to reach
  • Verified identity behind the profile
  • Completed deals and blind reviews, not just content
  • And if something still feels off: you review all work watermarked before the money is released, so a mistake costs you a decision, not a budget

Post who you want to reach, and every applicant arrives with their track record and reviews attached, so the hardest checks are already on the page.
